Made in Gloucestershire

Kier-staff

Post by Melanie Day, Submissions Manager (Kier Construction – Central, Cheltenham office)

All hands to the pump were required on Thursday 24 September as Kier management and office employees joined the team at Cheltenham Racecourse to prepare for staging a breakfast showcase event for 100 people – on a construction site! Senior managers were to be found packing goodie bags, unpacking PPE kit, sweeping up, fitting window screens and vacuuming the acres of carpet in the Members and Champagne bars of the oh-so-nearly finished grandstand.

Early on Friday morning, after everyone was escorted across the site to the new grandstand, a stunning breakfast was served up by the Jockey Club catering team, before guests took their seats for the show. The theme of the event was ‘Made in Gloucestershire’, and Kier operations director Ben Ramsay welcomed guests and speakers and showed a video made by local employees, which highlighted the exciting local projects Kier is undertaking around the county.

Architect Stephen Limbrick then recounted the story of the development of the project from start to ‘almost’ finish. He was followed by Cheltenham Racecourse’s operations director David Mackinnon, who provided some interesting facts and figures about The Festival and was highly complimentary about the Kier construction team, who have been eating, sleeping and breathing the project since March 2014.

Next, taking time off from his busy World Cup schedule, Stephen Vaughan, CEO of Gloucester Rugby Club, entertained guests with an amusing presentation on what staging World Cup events means to the club and to Gloucestershire.

To round things off, managing director of Kier Construction’s Central operations, Mark Pausey, gave the audience a brief summary of Kier’s national capabilities.

Presentations over, guests were invited on a tour of some areas of the grandstand, including the Royal Box, which was still being fitted out. The almost completed crescent walkway was admired, the site team were praised and many site selfies were taken with a stunning view and a brilliant blue sky as background. After being escorted back to the North Entrance guests picked up a Kier goodie bag filled with food and drink made by local Gloucestershire artisans.

“It was a real privilege to have a guided tour. The site is looking absolutely fabulous – the raised walkway had the real “wow” factor for me as I walked in, creating the amphitheatre as it does…but then we saw the rest! You and the team should be justifiably proud. It is an immense achievement”- Jeremy Williamson, MD, Cheltenham Development Task Force
