Building bridges with the next generation of civil engineers

It’s been almost a year since the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) launched its latest campaign to attract the next generation of talent into the industry, and as a founding partner we’ve been working closely with them to raise awareness of the sector.

With the spend on infrastructure in the UK anticipated to exceed £400bn, it’s essential we attract more people into the industry and to do that we need to do showcase the variety and breadth of roles available in the sector.

It’s important we maintain the momentum gained from the launch and keep showcasing the impressive civil engineering projects from across the world to encourage the next generation.

A new exhibition and learning hub launches this week with the unveiling of a world-record breaking 31m long suspension bridge made entirely from LEGO. The exhibition focusses on bridge engineering is the latest phase of the ICE’s attempts to demonstrate the breadth and variety of roles available in civil engineering.

Being held at One Great George Street, London until April 2017, the exhibition is free and includes interactive and virtual reality displays, and attendees will also get to see the record breaking LEGO bridge.

To support this we’re working with schools across the country to give young people the chance to learn more about civil engineering and try building structures themselves. We’ve donated a number of LEGO kits to schools and challenged the students to build their own interpretation of a bridge structure in under an hour. The structure can be as tall, wide or long as they liked as long as it resembled a bridge and we’re looking forward to seeing the final bridges from some budding civil engineers.

As a founding partner of the ICEs campaign we’re heavily involved in the exhibition and will be displaying a variety of presentations and videos on our latest infrastructure project, the Mersey Gateway.

The Mersey Gateway is a £600m project we’re currently working on which will deliver a six-lane toll bridge across the river Mersey connecting Widnes and Runcorn and when complete, will transform journey times across the region.

And to support the launch of the exhibition, we’re running a selfie competition with the Mersey Gateway to win a GoPro. To enter, you just need to take a selfie with the Mersey Gateway and post it on Twitter or Facebook to @kiergroup and @merseygateway with #bridgeselfie

The competition is open to everyone and we’ll be drawing the winner in the first week of December so we encourage all of you to enter if you’re near. Good luck and we’re looking forward to seeing your selfie attempts!
